He held out his arms, and I stepped into them, holding my breath as they tightened around me and he pulled me in close.

It was even more heavenly than I remembered.

When Brick had held me earlier, I’d been frantic with worry about my family, and my emotions had leaned toward fear and overwhelming uncertainty. This time, I wasn’t so distraught, which made it impossible not to be aware of how perfect he felt. How solid. How incredibly masculine.

At first, I just nestled against him with my elbows bent and my arms tucked between our chests, content to bask in the heat coming from him.

But as I relaxed into enjoying and appreciating how wonderful it was to be held by him, I sank deeper into his embrace, winding my arms around his waist and tucking my head beneath his chin. He adjusted his stance to pull me even closer, leaving no space at all between us.

I swear I could have stood there for eons. It no longer mattered that we were stranded on the side of a mountain. I didn’t feel the cold or fear the darkness. It was as though the world fell away and nothing else existed beyond the two of us and the present moment.

“Better?” he asked after a while, his voice a deep rumble in his chest that vibrated against my cheek.

“Yeah,” I said, leaning back to look up at him. “Thank you.”

When our eyes met, the jolt hit me again, even more intense than before. His arms tightened around me, and I was certain this time that he must feel it too. How could he not? My skin seemed to burn everywhere my body made contact with his. Surely, a heat like that couldn’t be generated all by myself.

Was this normal? Did other people feel this insane connection with one another?

I’d always brushed off the idea of instant attraction as fiction fodder in the novels I read, but this was undeniably real and like nothing I’d ever experienced before.

His gaze fell to my lips, and I held my breath in hopes he would kiss me.

It played out so vividly in my mental image reel that my lips tingled from the phantom pressure, and I sank my teeth into the fleshiest part of my bottom lip to ground myself in reality.

He lifted his eyes to mine, and I shuddered at the intensity of the desire evident there. His embrace tightened even further, and then he began to stroke one hand up and down my back, driving me insane with yearning.

“Still cold?” he asked, his voice husky.

“Not even a little bit.” Good God, man. Would you just kiss me already?

As though he’d heard my silent demand and decided to grant my request, he bent his head and reached to cup my face in his hand. He brushed his thumb across my skin in the gentlest of caresses, and I shuddered again, grateful he was holding me as my knees went weak.

So slowly that I thought I might self-combust with anticipation, he pressed his lips to mine.
